Should a Christian use Facebook

Remember how your life was without Facebook & other Social Media

Facebook has millions of active users, and 50% of active users log on to Facebook in any given day, spending almost an hour there every day. Facebook among other methods of social media are not evil and wrong in and of themselves; but it needs some careful thought.

One of the big things with Facebook is the 'Selfie'. How many are posting many pictures of themselves and also telling everyone about almost every move they make. It seems as if they are trying to elevate themselves and make themselves feel good. Selfie addiction seems to be prevalent in our culture, so driven to desire facebook and other social media sites. There seems to be a new Social Networking Addiction across the nation and more sad is that Christians are falling into this trap left and right. Do you remember how your life was without Facebook and other social medias. Some post many pictures of themselves in various poses. It appears that this is the ‘look at me syndrome’. It is all about me, see what I look like, what I do, what I say. In some cases these images would not be very edifying by any means; and Christians are not a whole lot different. Facebook seems to almost encourage a look-at-me mentality; and into extreme detail of everything you are doing. Do you think anyone cares what you are doing every minute of the day; but then again how many read all these things. For some, their life become wrapped up in being on Facebook.

God is dishonoured by these Social Medias quite often.

Are you coveting how many friends others have? Are you jealous of how many “likes” there are for his posts compared to yours?

Some Christians who can hardly let their phones or tablets hardly out of their hand; even checking and glancing at facebook, emails and texting while at Church. This is sad since they find it hard even to take the few short hours we should be worshipping God; to be checking out their friends quotes and pictures or texting their friends.

Social Networking Addiction and Selfie addiction' seem so ridiculous; but this has become the Social Networking Spirits of the Age. Are not we as Christians supposed to be set apart for Christ; but instead we are addicted to the Social Medias available to us. Instead of using these medias it is often the medias that are in control of our lives.

It is sad that when I mention to Christians about the issues with facebook; of how many get very defensive. I only wish many could defend the gospel as much as they defend their use of Facebook, etc.

Let’s examine if it is good for most Christians to be on Facebook. Paul says “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be enslaved by anything” (1 Cor 6:12). We need to think seriously about this.

Facebook feeds narcissism, pride and self-centeredness 1 John 2:15-17 (Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.) Facebook makes seeing the sins of others very easy.

Facebook is a place where people dump their emotions. How often things are said that would be regretted later. Even though you may not say and do these things publically; but how often do you sit back and read what everyone is saying about everyone else and then start telling others what you read or seen on Facebook.

God is on Facebook and sees all that we say, do, and post.

KEY VERSE(S)

Romans 12:1,2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
