Joel 2:13 "So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm."

When it refers here to garment rending it tells us of the hypocritical outward signs of religious outward show while the heart is still unrepentant. To have true repentance from the heart is far more difficult, and far less common. We may attend Church, its functions, follow many a tradition often instituted by the Church; these things pleasing to man but not to God. God is much more interested in the state of the heart of man, is his heart truly on God or is it on himself.

It is so much easier to follow rules and traditions than to give ones life to Christ. Can we drop our nets and follow Jesus much like those disciples did when Jesus fisrt came to them. It is not easy to give up all and follow Him.

Your garments may give great exposure to man, may find you lofty places in society and even the Church; but ultimately leave you in the pit of Hell. Your garments may leave you with pronounced public prominence, making your way greatly in this world only to find yourself come before the Throne with jesus saying to you 'I never knew you'.

Rend your garments may give temporary pleasure but will not give you eternal happiness, may give you pleasure among men for a season; but without a heart chance of giving yourself to Christ, you will have eternal punishment in Hell.

Rend your garments for todays pleasure; or more importantly give your heart to Jesus for an eternity in Heaven.
